They are also quick to learn tricks and commands.”

Veterinarian Jordyn Zoul, advisor to pet nutrition and wellness company Spot & Tango, adds that labs are a great choice if your kids are especially energetic: “They don’t typically take things personally and often see quick or hyper movements as fun.”

But do note that exercise is a requirement for this breed.

The Golden Retriever received nearly as many votes as the lab. Sally Grottini, certified trainer of service and therapy dogs and the dog behavior specialist at JustAnswer, describes this breed as friendly, loyal, and energetic.

“They are generally not skittish dogs, so the movement and sounds of children would not make them react negatively,” she shares. “They do love to snuggle, and if the child is willing, a Golden will relax on the floor with them to watch TV. They are very loyal to family, so they would likely keep an eye on a child when outside.”

“For more active families, many Goldens like playing fetch or going for walks or runs,” Zoul adds. “This can be a great way to add activity and routine to your family’s day-to-day life.”

Like Labs, Goldens must get regular exercise.

If you or your children suffer from allergies, the Bichon Frise is a hypoallergenic breed that’s also great with kids.

“They are big, loving personalities in small bodies, which can be convenient for a busy family,” Zoul explains. “They’re also thought to be a rather intelligent breed and can be highly trainable. Teaching them tricks or behaviors can be a fun activity for kids and dogs alike.”

Julie Hunt, a veterinarian at Embrace Pet Insurance, notes that Bichons are a nice option if you have very small children or if your kids are intimidated by large dogs.

As Hunt notes, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was originally bred as a lap dog, so this breed is perfect if you’re looking for a dog that will be gentle with kids.

“It also likes to go on walks or play as well, but it excels at snuggles,” she says.

Zould adds, “‘Cavys’ as they’re affectionately referred to, are some of the happiest dogs and love everyone they meet.” She describes them as “a Golden Retriever personality, but in a smaller size.”

“Few breeds combine strength, silliness, and sweetness quite like the Boxer,” says Murdoch.

Hunt agrees that this breed is affectionate and loyal. “They generally like to play with children in the home and are tolerant of a child’s antics without becoming upset, making them an ideal family pet,” she explains.

If you’re okay with a dog that may bark a lot—”As a hound, they can be vocal in the home, letting you know what they want or when someone has arrived,” Hunt points out—a Beagle is a lovely, family-friendly pet.

“They are generally easy to train, and as long as they are well socialized, they tend to get along well in a home with children,” she continues. “They tend to have an affectionate personality and like to play.”

“While not one of the commonly thought of family dogs, Greyhounds tend to be some of the calmest, gentlest breeds out there,” shares Zoul. “They are kind, peaceful, and often referred to by their owners as couch potatoes.”

Therefore, she says this dog breed works well with children who may be more shy or reserved.

“They often amble rather than dart around like many of our more energetic breeds,” she adds. “These dogs are typically friendly to strangers, but they really love their family most.”

However, Zoul points out that you’ll want to be cognizant of Greyhounds’ history in the racing industry: “There are many reputable rescues that are always looking to place these dogs in loving homes. If you do end up with a rescue, make sure they undergo a full veterinary check-up as their histories can often be unknown.”

Despite their size (they typically weigh between 100 and 150 pounds), Grottini says Newfoundlands are “gentle giants.”

“They have a goofy personality and love attention from their family. But once playtime is over, they are big nappers, giving everyone in the home a rest,” she shares. “They love to be petted and often enjoy a hug.”

Speaking of gentle giants, Grottini also recommends the Bernese Mountain Dog for kids.

“This breed is usually around 70 to 100 pounds, but they are known to be extremely gentle around children,” she says. “They are loyal to the family and very patient, and they often have strong bonds to the children in the home.”

If you live in an area with cold winters, note that Bernese Mountain Dogs love to play outside in the snow. The only possible drawback is that “they are extreme shedders,” notes Grottini.

If you’re a believer in the saying, “adopt don’t shop,” fear not: Experts say mixed breeds (or “mutts”) can be just as good with kids.

“Take a look at the mix that makes up the dog,” suggests Grottini. “If it is a Golden Retriever/Newfoundland mix, you will have a happy dog. A Golden/Labrador mix will give loyalty and playfulness.”

“Getting a mutt also cuts down on predisposed ailments that are common in full-bred dogs,” she continues. “If you choose to get a mutt, have a trainer go with you to do a temperament test on the dog before you decide on the one you want to bring home.”

There’s a reason so many families choose Labrador Retrievers for their first pet, and why they’re often used as service dogs.

“Labrador retrievers are friendly and easygoing, which makes them ideal puppers for beginners,” says board-certified veterinarian Melissa M. Brock.

Moreover, they’re intelligent, loyal, and great with kids, according to veterinarian and behaviorist Paola Cuevas.

If you think you may add more dogs to the family down the road, a Lab is a safe bet. “They’re extremely sociable and don’t mind being in the company of other dogs, even if they’ve never met before,” shares Brock.

This high-energy and active breed needs a lot of exercise, and they love the water, making them great beach dogs and easy to bathe. The only thing to consider is that you may spend a good chunk of time vacuuming. “Their thick and water-repellent coat sheds a lot!” cautions Cuevas.

When it comes to being affectionate, good with children, and good with other dogs, the American Kennel Club (AKC) gives Golden Retrievers the highest possible scores.

Much like Labs, they’re a perfect choice if you have kids since they’re “patient, calm, and gentle,” according to Brock. They are also well-suited for multi-pet households and are very easy to train.

Goldens require daily exercise—in fact, the AKC says they’re great companions for “long runs and bike rides”—but they’re slightly less energetic than Labs (though they are on par in the shedding department).

Poodles come in three sizes—Standard (more than 15 inches tall at the shoulder), Miniature (15 inches or under), and Toy (no more than 10 inches), according to the AKC. That makes them adaptable to a variety of households.

“These active, graceful, and people-oriented dogs have won great popularity as home pets because they’re an intelligent breed that’s loyal and easy to train,” promises Cuevas.

A Poodle is a good match for an active lifestyle. “Originally bred as hunting dogs, they love to retrieve and play both on land and water,” Cuevas says. If you live near a beach or lake, note that Poodles are exceptional swimmers.

Their low-allergen coats don’t shed much, so they’re easy to groom, and they score top marks from the AKC for how affectionate and good with children they are.

Because poodles can sometimes have temperamental personalities, various breeds of “doodles,” or poodle mixes, have been crossbred over the years.

For a doodle that’s more on the medium size and is still hypoallergenic, first-time owners may want to consider a Goldendoodle, a mix with a Golden Retriever.

According to pet behaviorist, dog trainer, and CEO and founder of PetDT, Jacquelyn Kennedy, Goldendoodles “don’t have the excessive prey drive of some terriers, and they don’t require as much exercise as, say, a Husky.” But they do love to play.

A fenced-in yard where they can freely run around for 20-30 minutes is ideal, explains Pet Finder. The adoption website also notes that “good puppy socialization is key to their development,” so you may want to consider enrolling your new pup in a playgroup or hitting up the local dog park.

“A true lap dog, Maltese can be very sociable, loving, and gentle,” says Jennifer Bruns, DVM, MPVM at PetSmart Veterinary Services. “They are also known for their quick learning abilities, which can be helpful for a first-time dog owner.”

However, if you spend most of the day out of the house, the Maltese may not be the best breed. “With their friendly temperament, Maltese often prefer to spend most of their time with their owner,” says Bruns. But if you work from home, “Maltese can provide unmatched loyalty and love,” she adds.

“Shih Tzus have a reputation for being affectionate, playful, and loving,” says Bruns. “Weighing in on the smaller side, typically between 10 and 16 pounds, Shih Tzus don’t require quite as much outdoor exercise as some other breeds and are often happiest spending time with their pet parent indoors, making them a great option for apartment dwellers.”

Courtnye Jackson, a veterinarian and founder of The Pets Digest, adds that Shih Tzus are generally calmer than other breeds of their size: “While they will bark, they don’t seem to bark quite as much as their smaller counterparts.”

One thing to consider with Shih Tzus is that their long hair requires daily brushing, according to the AKC. And they’re a bit high-maintenance when it comes to grooming.

“Remember to comb the mustache and topknot daily, and gently clean the corner of the eyes with a damp cloth. To protect the Shih Tzu’s eyes from being irritated, the hair on the top of the head should be trimmed short or tied up into a topknot,” explains the AKC.

This breed is a great option for a smaller home because of its size and personality. They’re easy to train, are hypoallergenic, and don’t shed much.

“Yorkies are known for being affectionate and loving, but they tend to be less needy than Shih Tzus in terms of physical contact,” explains Brock.

A Yorkie is also a wonderful breed for people who live alone, as they’re high on the AKC’s watchdog meter. “Tenacious, feisty, brave, and sometimes bossy, the Yorkie exhibits all the traits of a true terrier,” they say.

Their glossy hair, which can drape down to the ground, requires just as much attention as Shih Tzus. Their coats are very similar to human hair, and if kept long, they should be brushed every day, says the AKC.

Another easygoing terrier is the Boston Terrier. “They are usually known for their upbeat, friendly, happy-go-lucky personalities,” says Jackson. “Most Boston Terriers will do well around children and are happy living in apartments or homes.”

This breed doesn’t shed or drool much, and they’re easy to groom and only require moderate exercise. These dogs have even been nicknamed “the American Gentlemen” for their “impeccable manners,” according to the AKC.

According to Bruns, Cavelier King Charles Spaniels are “known for their fun-loving, gentle dispositions while also retaining the spunkiness of other sporting spaniel breeds, making them a good fit for a variety of pet parent lifestyles.”

Bruns notes that since this breed is adaptable and patient, they’re a good fit if you have other pets. And Travis Brorsen, a pet expert for Animal Planet, celebrity dog trainer, host of My Big Fat Pet Makeover, and judge on the Discovery Plus series The Dog Games, adds that “they are even known to be extra gentle when around babies and toddlers, so if you have a new human and are looking to get a dog, this could be the one for you.”

Another positive attribute of Cavelier King Charles Spaniels is that “they love to please,” says Brorsen, “which can make training easier when using positive reinforcement.”

Whippets are known for their speed, earning them the nickname of “the poor man’s racehorse,” according to the AKC, which also notes that they are agile and athletic. But despite their sleek physiques and fast gait, this is a breed that loves nothing more than “to curl up and lie on the couch,” shares Brorsen.

“First-time owners also like the medium-size frame and their yearning to be with their people,” he says. However, you may need to invest some extra time (and potentially money) into training this breed.

There are countless reasons why the Bichon Frisé makes a great dog breed for first-time pet parents. For starters, they’re one of the longest-living (read: healthiest) breeds. And despite their fluffy coats, they’re a great pick if you have allergies.

“Apart from their kind and lovable personality that makes them so great for family dogs, Bichons are well-known for their pure white double coats that produce almost no dander,” Sabrina Kong, DVM at We Love Doodles, previously told Best Life.

Bichons are also quite low-maintenance. “The Bichon Frise is an excellent dog for a first-time owner or someone who appreciates their downtime,” Iram Sharma, DVM, experienced veterinarian and writer at PupVine, told Best Life. “While lively, it doesn’t require too many walks, and would prefer to spend the entire day cuddling.”

However, not everyone loves the fragrance. “The body butter smells like Trident gum to me,” notes one Redditor. “Smells like Wrigleys Winterfresh gum!” agrees another.

American consumers are so taken with buy now, pay later plans that they are surging this holiday shopping season, The Washington Post reports. “The services have driven $10.1 billion in spending, a 9 percent jump from last year, according to Adobe Analytics,” they wrote.

“Cyber Monday was the single largest day for BNPL, accounting for a record $1.03 billion, a more than 4 percent increase over last year. That is about 7 percent of what Americans spent online that day,” they continued.

However, BNPL can be a slippery slope, financial experts warn, putting you into a cycle of debt and at risk of potential penalties or interest fees. With that in mind, here are six times you should never use buy now, pay later.

When people get used to services like Afterpay, Affirm, and Klarna for bigger purchases, they might start relying on them to buy everyday essentials as well. But this could become a bad habit that’s hard to break, according to Austin Hair, financial expert and real estate investor.

“Purchasing everyday items like groceries or gas on installment can create a cycle of dependency on credit for basic needs,” he shares. “It’s crucial to budget and pay for these items outright to avoid a situation where you’re continuously paying for past expenses.”

You should be careful when it comes to relying on installment payments for depreciating assets such as cars, Sherman Standberry, certified public accountant and managing partner at the tax firm My CPA Coach, tells Best Life.

“Anything that loses value over time should ideally not be purchased with BNPL tools,” he advises. “The item could depreciate faster than you’re able to pay it off.”

Hair agrees and adds that designer clothes, accessories, or jewelry also fall into this category.

“This can lead to unnecessary debt for items that don’t offer long-term value or return on investment,” he cautions. “It’s better to save and pay in full to avoid the added stress of installments on non-essential items.”

Many people are considering purchasing fitness equipment in the new year to help with their fitness resolutions. But Robert Farrington, money expert and founder of The College Investor, warns against using BNPL plans to do so.

“Think about the necessity of the purchase and how often you’ll use the workout equipment,” he says, adding that it’s often wiser to buy second-hand options instead of financing expensive machines.

“Come February or March, you’ll likely see a lot of folks selling unwanted workout equipment on online marketplaces as they invested in their fitness for the new year, but realized they set unrealistic expectations,” he notes.

For example, Peloton has an entire resale site where users can sell and buy used bikes and treadmills.

When the newest iPhone comes out, you might want to get the latest model at all costs. But if you have to pay for it in installments, it’s better to wait, according to Melanie Musson, a finance expert working with Clearsurance.com.

“If your phone is functional, you can keep using it,” she points out. “And when you do decide to upgrade, chances are you can do it with your phone company with 0 percent interest for a longer period of time than you can with BNPL tools.”

Buy now, pay later plans can seem too good to be true. After all, it’s like a credit card without the interest, right? Not always.

Certain BNPL offers come with deferred interest, meaning the contract is only interest-free for the introductory period. “But if there’s any balance left over, even $1, you can be charged interest on the original amount of the purchase,” cautions Nasdaq.

To avoid this, read the terms and conditions carefully, looking for phrasing like “no interest if paid in full within six months,” advises Nasdaq.

Buy now, pay later plans are in a kind of gray area when it comes to your credit score.

“BNPL companies don’t report to credit bureaus, so when people go to apply for traditional loans or new credit cards, their full debt isn’t being taken into consideration, which can lead to an overextended line of credit,” Best Life previously explained.

The other thing to be aware of is that on-time BNPL payments don’t positively affect your credit score like credit card payments do. However, late or partial BNPL payments can negatively affect your credit score.

A growing wealth of research suggests that common mental health disorders—including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)—can actually shorten a person’s lifespan by 10 to 20 years. A major driver of this alarming gap is the much higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in people living with mental health conditions.

A Sept. 2025 study, published in The Lancet Regional Health—Europe, highlights how deeply intertwined mental and cardiovascular health can be. It also explains why addressing both together is essential for closing the life-expectancy gap.

People with mental health disorders face a 50 percent to two-times higher risk of heart disease, stroke, and cardiovascular death compared to those without these conditions, the study says. And, the relationship appears to go both ways: Developing heart disease can also trigger new mental health issues, including depression and anxiety. (It is estimated that more than 40 percent of people with cardiovascular disease also have a mental health condition.)

Perhaps even more shockingly, the researchers found that those living with depression are 72 percent more likely to develop heart disease, while those with anxiety disorders saw a 41 percent higher risk of cardiovascular mortality. Those with schizophrenia were at greatest risk, nearly doubling their odds with a shocking 95 percent increase.

This “comorbidity” happens for many reasons. Acutely stressful life events and chronic stress—which can contribute to the onset of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and schizophrenia—are also powerful risk factors for heart disease. Biological pathways such as inflammation and hormonal stress responses may worsen both conditions, as can depression-linked behaviors like smoking, inactivity, and poor sleep.

Though these risk factors are well known to medical professionals, people with mental health disorders often receive inferior cardiovascular care. “Despite having more interactions with the healthcare system, they undergo fewer physical checkups and screenings,” the study states, noting that they are also less likely to receive prompt diagnosis and treatment.

These gaps stem from social and structural barriers, including stigma and socioeconomic disadvantage. Compounding the problem, people with mental health disorders are frequently excluded from medical research, making it harder to design effective prevention and treatment strategies.

The study authors stress that reducing these health disparities requires integrated, whole-person care, noting that a “large proportion of untreated mental health disorders in the population is likely a combination of system, provider, and patient factors (such as limited access to care, stigma, poor health literacy, lack of social support).”

They further add that these barriers call for “better strategies towards outreach, screening, treatment referral and access to care for mental health problems in primary care and cardiology settings.” These might include:

• Routine mental-health screening in heart-care settings
• Better cardiovascular screening and prevention in mental-health care settings
• Interventions that address stress, trauma, and lifestyle risk factors
• Policies targeting social determinants of health, such as poverty and access to quality care
• Mind-body practices that improve both cardiovascular and mental health risk factors

The findings underscore an important message: that mental health is physical health. Left unaddressed, mental health disorders can dramatically shorten life—often by one to two decades—largely due to preventable cardiovascular disease. Meanwhile, strengthening mental-health support, improving heart-disease care, and integrating the two are essential steps toward closing this life-threatening gap.
