The post 4 U.S. Airports Were Just Ranked Among the Worst in the World appeared first on Best Life.

When you’re heading to the airport, the last thing you want to worry about is having a bad experience. Of course, some places can’t help but face issues, especially in places where delays caused by storms are relatively common. But in some cases, air travel hubs can become overcrowded, messy, and chaotic by virtue of the fact that tens of thousands of people can move through them every day. Now, new data has shed some light on which airports are the worst in the world, including a few that are located in the U.S.

RELATED: 10 Airport Layover Hacks You Need to Know.

In a recent international analysis conducted by Sail Croatia, information was collected on a variety of airport pain points. Categories included the overall percentage of flights that get delayed, passenger density, and the number of travelers who search for information on lost bags online. They then calculated each and awarded a final score out of 100, with higher numbers indicating a worse travel experience.

While you may not always have a choice of which hubs you’re flying in or out of, it can sometimes help to know which are more problematic so you can prepare yourself before you fly. Here are the U.S. airports that were ranked among the worst in the world in a new study.

4. Harry Reid International Airport (LAS)

Harry Reid International Airport signage

Most travelers consider their time in the Las Vegas airport among the tamer parts of their trip (even though there are plenty of slot machines ready for anyone waiting to board). But according to the study, flying through Sin City’s Harry Reid International Airport can be worse than bad roll at the craps table.

Analysis found that despite a relatively low percentage of delayed flights at 21.6 percent, it still had very crowded terminals with 5.16 million passengers per square kilometer annually. There were also 1,400 searches for help with bags, overall landing LAS with a score of 34.90.

3. Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (SEA)

Seattle Tacoma Airport

West Coast-based travelers know SeaTac can be a busy place, but now data confirms it. The Seattle airport ranks very closely to LAS across the board, with 20.98 percent of flights delayed and 5.16 million passengers per square kilometer.

However, the Washington State hub saw double the number of lost baggage searches online, with 2,800 queries. This landed the airport with an overall score of 36.

2. Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)

Newark Liberty International Airport

As the “third” airport serving the New York City area, Newark Liberty faces its fair share of challenges, including weather-related delays. In fact, data from the Sail Croatia study found that 28.9 percent of flights from the hub didn’t take off on time.

It’s also dreadfully crowded, coming in third on the list for passenger density with 5.95 million per square kilometer. Combined with 1,400 annual lost-bag searches, it scored 39.6 overall.

1. Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)

Atlanta international airport

It might not come as a surprise that the busiest airport in the world—carrying a whopping 108 million passengers per year—runs into operational problems. In fact, the Atlanta hub ranked second in the world on the list, thanks to its especially crowded terminals and about 21 percent of its flights getting delayed.

But it’s the lost luggage that really sends this massive transit hub over the top. The airport sees close to 36,000 annual lost bag queries, which is roughly seven times higher than the next-worst offender on the list. All in all, ATL was served with a score of 51.24.

While it can be nice to jet away from the cold, there’s also something special about embracing winter with a snowy, rustic getaway. The beyond-helpful service works by helping travelers book flights using their points and miles, often helping turn a daunting and frustrating process into an easy one. For Cyber Monday, the service is offering 40 percent off its point.me Premium membership through Dec. 3 using the code TUESDAY. This brings the cost down from $260 (with a total value of $475) all the way down to just $156, making it the biggest public discount the company has ever offered.

Besides full access to the platform, you’ll also get a free points strategy consultation (valued at $200), a one-on-one session on how to use point.me, unlimited real-time award flight search. Plus, you’ll get award deal alerts and multi-city search to catch rare opportunities, as well as a $100 credit toward the site’s concierge booking services.

]]>
With a record-setting 82 million people expected to make a 50+ mile-long Thanksgiving commute, the busiest travel period of the year just got a whole lot busier. Nearly 90 percent of travelers will be hitting the road and airport traffic will kick into high gear starting on Tuesday, with an estimated six million ticketed passengers, according to AAA. Congestion and delays are inevitable—and Mother Nature isn’t helping the cause either.

A series of coast-to-coast storms will bring “rain, snow, severe thunderstorms, and strong winds” to much of the central and eastern U.S. ahead of Thanksgiving, throwing a wrench “during peak travel days,” per an AccuWeather press release shared with Best Life.

RELATED: 5 Regions With the Highest Risk of Snow This Thanksgiving.

A fast-moving, cross-country storm is forecasted to pick up on the West Coast late Tuesday, possibly disrupting last-minute travel plans. Meanwhile, the Mississippi Valley should brace for “a swath of showers and thunderstorms,” warns AccuWeather meteorologists.

Midwest- and Ohio Valley-based airports could start issuing delays and cancellations as early as Tuesday, depending on Mother Nature’s cooperation. (Travelers going through Chicago, Nashville, St. Louis, Houston, and Minneapolis should monitor their flights.) The Upper Midwest and Great Lakes face “snow and slippery road conditions.”

From there, things aren’t slowing down. On Wednesday, frigid temperatures, gusty winds, and snow will hit the northwestern Rockies as well as parts of Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. Back in the Midwest, major cities like Chicago, Detroit, and Cleveland will be treated to a wintry mix storm.

“This precipitation may coincide with a high volume of airport and road traffic ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, raising the potential for weather-related disruptions,” warns AccuWeather.

Annual turkey trots and parades in the Pacific Northwest may be cancelled this year due to a high risk of potential floods. “Difficult travel conditions” are expected along the coasts of Washington and Oregon.

“An atmospheric river will drench the Pacific Northwest, while lake-effect snow is forecast to impact travel across the Great Lakes region,” says AccuWeather.

Travel warning: “Visibility will be reduced and road conditions will deteriorate quickly where persistent snow bands develop along interstates 81, 90, 94 and 196. High temperatures in the Northeast will stay in the 20s and 30s.”

The surge of cold air will continue to build from Wednesday night through Friday, producing “snow squalls” and “localized whiteouts.” Parts of the Midwest and Northeast are under a high wind gust alert on Thursday, with the chance of up to 60 miles per hour winds.

Suffice to say: Winter is most definitely on the horizon. Those traveling during the Thanksgiving rush should plan for delays and cancellations, and take advantage of flexible travel plans if possible.

The post 12 Most Haunted U.S. Towns for a Spooky Fall Trip appeared first on Best Life.

]]>
It seems that every town has its own ghost story, but some are more haunting and believable than others. While some travelers go out of their way to avoid these sorts of places, others clamor for them, centering trips around haunted locations. From towns with old battlefields where thousands were killed, to abandoned locales that invite people to create their own lore, to hotels filled with spirits that spread an ominous feeling throughout the whole community—there’s something for every thrill seeker on this list. Read on for the 12 most haunted towns in the U.S. for a spooky fall trip.

1
Sleepy Hollow, New York

headless horseman in sleepy hollow cemetary

It’s up for debate whether or not the Headless Horseman is actually riding around the village of Sleepy Hollow, but that doesn’t mean the New York town, which was immortalized in Washington Irving’s 1820 short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” isn’t still a spooky locale.

“Visit Sleepy Hollow Cemetery to view the final resting places of Washington Irving and other famous individuals, including Andrew Carnegie, William Rockefeller, Walter Chrysler, and even the notable Elizabeth Arden,” says a representative for the New York State Department of Tourism. “It has been said, on more than one occasion, that an apparition has been seen among the graves, and many who have walked through the cemetery say they hear silent whispering.”

In addition to taking a lantern-lit tour of the cemetery, Jenny Ly, founder of Gowanderly, recommends visiting the old Philipsburg Manor, “which has been transformed into the spooky Horseman’s Hollow.”

“The live performance of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow story at Washington Irving’s home in Sunnyside merges the past and present for a singular theatrical experience, and is arguably the most intriguing event,” Ly adds.

2
Savannah, Georgia

Savannah Georgia

If you’re ready to spot some ghosts and be immersed in a spooky atmosphere, look no further than Savannah, Georgia. While it’s technically a city, it still has that small-town Southern charm—and according to Jolene Ejmont, international travel expert, planner, and founder of Wanderlust Storytellers, Savannah is also a “hotspot for paranormal enthusiasts.”

The Mercer House, once owned by voodoo-practicing antique dealer James A. Williams, is rumored to be haunted by a man he was acquitted of killing,” she says.

The famous Bonaventure Cemetery is another must-see spot, but be forewarned that there’s more than meets the eye. “It’s said to echo with ghostly laughter and conversations, as well as sightings of ghost dogs,” Ejmont says.

Erin Clarkson of Savannah First-Timer’s Guide suggests taking a ghost tour: “Guides tell stories of Savannah’s past while directing guests to peek beyond the cemetery gates in search of spirits they can capture on camera.”

In addition, thrill seekers should check out The Pirate’s House restaurant and the 17Hundred90 Hotel, both of which are believed to be haunted.

3
Salem, Massachusetts

The Witch House in Salem Massachusetts

Salem, Massachusetts, is pretty much synonymous with “spooky,” thanks to its somewhat sordid history. The Massachusetts city was home to the Salem Witch Trials, a series of hearings and prosecutions in which 25 people were killed either by hanging, being stoned to death, or dying in jail after being accused of witchcraft by other members of the community.

One of the reportedly most haunted places in Salem is Old Burying Point Cemetery, which is the resting place of many of the people involved in the trials, including a memorial to those who were killed during the Witch Trials. It’s also the second-oldest cemetery in the country.

The city is also home to the Salem Witch Museum, which houses sets that allow visitors to relive the experience of the Salem Witch Trials, as well as an exhibit on how the perceptions of witchcraft have changed over time.

“Top it all off by attending the Witches Ball, an annual masquerade hosted in the venerable Hawthorne Hotel,” says Ly.

4
Tonopah, Nevada

the clown motel in tonopah, nevada

Head out west to explore the haunted haven of Tonopah, Nevada. According to Bryn Culbert, travel expert and content strategist at travel booking platform Wanderu, this town earns its distinction due to its “chilling accommodation options.”

“‘America’s Scariest Motel’ is the Clown Motel in Tonopah, a roadside motel adorned with clowns both cute and creepy,” Culbert tells Best Life. “In 2015, the motel was featured on ‘Ghost Adventures,’ with recordings of spooky voices and even a clown doll moving itself.”

Making things even scarier, this “peculiar landmark” is located right next door to Tonopah Cemetery.”The cemetery only welcomed new residents between 1901 and 1911, but those buried there sure have reason to haunt,” Culbert says. “Victims of the 1905 Tonopah Plague (of pneumonia) and the 1911 Belmont Mine Fire make up most of the graves.”

Per Culbert’s recommendation, a more “refined” but still haunted spot is The Mizpah Hotel, which opened in 1907 and became known as “The Jewel of the Desert.”

“A year-round resident of the hotel, known simply as the ‘Lady in Red,’ appears to have never checked out. She lived (and likely worked) on the fifth floor of the hotel until a jealous ex stabbed and strangled her,” Culbert shares. “The mysterious lady’s spirit lives on at The Mizpah, where guests report whispered voices in the elevator and other strange phenomena.”

5
St. Augustine, Florida

Historic old tombstones in a graveyard in St. Augustine Florida - Mission of Nombre de Dios

As the oldest European settlement in the contiguous United States, the city of St. Augustine, Florida, has a lot to offer visitors. The coastal spot was ranked one of the best small towns to visit in the country by U.S. News & World Report for its century-spanning history, so it’s safe to say that St. Augustine has racked up a few ghost stories as well.

“There are some different ghost tours you can take in St. Augustine, which will introduce you to some of the most haunted places in the city,” says Isabella Diaz, the founder and site manager of travel website Rubalkhali. “One of the most popular is the St. Augustine Lighthouse Ghost Tour, which takes you to the lighthouse that is said to be haunted by the ghosts of three young girls who died in a fire.”

Another highlight of a visit to St. Augustine is Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth Archeological Park, the supposed original landing spot of Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon, and the presumed site of the Fountain of Youth that de Leon was looking for. While the freshwater source of water promises eternal life, that wasn’t the fate of de Leon, whose ghost is said to haunt the area, according to Diaz.

6
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

gettysburg pennsylvania

It makes sense that Gettysburg is one of the most haunted towns in the United States: Located in southern Pennsylvania, it is the site of the bloodiest battle of the Civil War.

“Gettysburg was the scene of a vicious three-day battle in 1863 that resulted in more than 51,000 casualties,” says author, travel blogger, and Gettysburg native Jessica James. “The battle raged in the streets and the farmland surrounding the town, and the wounded were treated in every house, church, barn, and building that could be found.”

Since the battle, the town has developed a reputation as one of the most haunted places in the country, and nearly every building can be associated with a ghost story.

“Some of the most haunted sites include the battlefield itself, where there are plenty of stories of sightings of Civil War soldiers who appear and disappear like a mist,” James says. “The Farnsworth House and Cashtown Inn bed and breakfasts both have their most haunted rooms for those who want to try to sleep in a building that was used as a Civil War hospital.”

Nowadays, the battlefield is a part of the National Military Park system, where car and bus tours of the park can be booked in advance.

7
Bodie, California

Bodie California

It took less than 50 years for Bodie, California, to go from a gold rush boomtown to a ghost town. The former mining hub once produced more than $100 million worth of gold, with a population in the thousands. That dropped to zero by 1950, and now, Bodie serves as a historical landmark.

The ghost town designation isn’t the only spooky thing about the town: People claim that it is not only haunted but also cursed.

“It’s not shocking that there are several accounts of paranormal activity in this area, including ghost sightings and music coming from bars with their doors closed,” says Matthew Bowley, a marketing manager at travel website Solmar Villas. “Additionally, it is said that anyone who takes anything from Bodie, even a rock, will be cursed with misfortune and health issues once they leave.”

As Best Life previously reported, “The nonprofit Bodie Foundation offers tours, ghost walks, and other special events.”

8
Bangor, Maine

Bangor Maine

Any serious fan of horror novelist Stephen King knows that the author behind Carrie and It sets most of his work in his home state of Maine. While you can’t go out and visit King’s fictional towns like Derry or Castle Rock, you can visit Bangor, which serves as the inspiration for many of the author’s works.

Fans can take Stephen King-based tours of the city, which stop at places King has lived and locations that have inspired his stories.

But the author’s connection to the city isn’t the only reason that it ended up on this list. Bangor is also home to the Hill House, a historic home that is said to be haunted by the ghosts of former residents Samuel and Matilda Dale, who purchased the home in 1846.

9
Atchison, Kansas

the haunted McInteer Villa in Atchison, Kansas

You might not instantly think of ghosts when you think of Kansas, as the state is more widely known for its connection to The Wizard of Oz and college football. But take a trip to Atchison, and you might change your mind.

Located along the Missouri River, Atchison is the birthplace and hometown of Amelia Earhart, the aviation pioneer who mysteriously vanished over the Pacific Ocean in 1937. But it’s also known for its legendary haunts (literally!).

“Atchison is widely regarded as the most haunted town in Kansas,” says Wesley McDermott, the owner of Haunted Rooms, a travel website that specializes in haunted locations. “The town is so haunted that the Travel Channel did a special segment called ‘Haunted Town’ that depicts many of the most haunted locations, including the Sallie House, McInteer Villa, McPike Mansion, and Benedictine College.”

According to Atchison’s website, there have been ghost stories told about different spots in the town since the late 1800s, and they currently offer a Haunted Trolley Tour that takes visitors to some of the town’s most eerie sites. You can even book an overnight stay at the McInteer Villa.

10
Estes Park, Colorado

Estes Park Colorado

Mostly known as the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park is a mountainous town that’s perfect for outdoor adventure lovers. But that’s not the only thing it’s known for. Towering above the town is the more-than-a-century-old Stanley Hotel, which has been the fodder for ghost stories, including a pretty well-known one called The Shining.

After spending time at the hotel with his wife, Stephen King was so inspired by his spooky stay that he wrote the horror novel. The hotel capitalizes on its hauntings by offering its own ghost tour. You can also book a night in room 217, one of the most haunted spots in the hotel, and where King once stayed.

11
Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia

the Peyton Randolph House in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia

Spooky spots are hidden all around Colonial Williamsburg if you know where to look.

“When in Williamsburg, you can take a ghost tour walking around colonial Williamsburg, guided by a local in costume. You’ll learn about the life and customs of colonial Williamsburg, while also discovering its darker past,” says Dan Bagby of HoneymoonAlways.com.

“You’ll learn about Blackbeard the pirate and how he and his crew were overtaken after years of terrorizing the area, and about the local history of witches,” he explains. “You’ll also visit the first public hospital for the mentally ill, where experimental treatments were performed, and the Peyton Randolph House, considered to be one of the most haunted buildings in the USA.”

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans Louisiana

Bourbon Street may lure visitors from around the world with its boozy drinks and nightlife, but even more spellbinding adventures await in other parts of New Orleans. Around the city, restaurants, bars, and even cemeteries offer ghost tours for families or adults looking for a haunting story of the past.

“If you’re looking to go it on your own without a guided tour of stories, the LaLaurie Mansion can be seen from the outside,” Christopher Falvey, co-founder of Unique NOLA Tours, tells Best Life. “Haunted bars such as the Creole Cookery, Bombay Club, and May Baily’s Club all have stories they’ll entertain you with. And there’s the famous table at Muriel’s Jackson Square, which is set out for beings from the beyond and has a wonderful (and lengthy) historic and haunted story attached to it.”

But the best way to explore the city’s unique and eerie cemeteries is by booking a tour of the Garden District.

Fans of fall might count the first day of “sweater weather” or that first sip of a pumpkin spice latte as hallmark events of the season. However, true autumn aficionados know that spying those first pops of red, orange, and yellow that appear when the leaves begin to change is usually the best way to get into the spirit. However, for those who want to make the most of those once-a-year colorscapes, a little travel is sometimes required. Fortunately, a new ranking has determined the best states for fall foliage views.

RELATED: When 5 U.S. Regions Will Hit Peak Fall Foliage This Year.

A new study gauged which places were best for fall colors.

Hoping to plan a leaf peeping trip? You’re not alone. In a recent study, 65 percent of American travelers said they had or were hoping to take a “season chasing” trip. Of that group, 51 percent listed fall as the best time of year to get away, making it the most popular of the four.

But with so many options, where will you get the best bang for your buck? To answer the question once and for all, PlayFame Social Casino conducted a study to find out which locales would provide the best results for this year.

To come up with the results, researchers compiled data on different states, including total forest coverage area, how long the fall foliage season lasts, how many scenic drives were available, typical weather conditions, the number of nearby national parks, and camping friendliness. They also turned to social media, scouring fall foliage-related Instagram tags and leaf peeping posts on TripAdvisor.

What are the best states for leaf-peeping?

So, which areas provide the most vivid fall colors? After compiling all of the information and assigning each state a score out of 100, these were the places that came out on top.

  • Colorado — 47.72
  • Utah — 44.54
  • Idaho — 44.51
  • California — 43.10
  • West Virginia — 42.58
  • New York — 41.78
  • New Hampshire — 41.09
  • Maine — 38.78
  • Oregon — 37.04
  • Michigan — 36.19

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Colorado leads the pack, thanks in part because it tops the list with the most scenic drives (13) and nearly twice as many social media hashtag mentions. Utah also shines, boasting the second-longest average viewing window of 17 days, the third most national parks (with five overall), and a high camping friendliness rating.

In third place, Idaho ties Utah for length of peak season and tops the rest of the nation in camping friendliness. Meanwhile, fourth-place California boasts plenty of sunny autumn days, the most national parks (with nine overall), and eight scenic drives.

However, if you’re most concerned with finding the time to experience fall foliage, New York might be your best bet: The sixth-place entry boasts the longest average peak season by far with 31 days.

You should choose the trip that’s best for you.

Even with all the data, landing on a fall foliage trip destination can be difficult. However, the beautiful part about this seasonal spectacle is the variety of experiences available.

“Some regions are defined by their dense forests full of color, while others are known for dramatic mountain backdrops or coastal views where the trees meet the water,” Joerg Nottebaum, spokesperson for PlayFame Social Casino, says of the results. “In certain states, the season lasts weeks, giving people plenty of time to plan a visit, while in others it’s a short but spectacular burst of color that feels all the more fleeting. That mix of landscapes and climates means there’s no single way to experience fall.”

Getting stuck with a dreaded middle seat on a long-haul route or facing delays might feel like the worst things that can happen during a flight. However, hitting bumpy skies is an entirely different level of travel nightmare. Particularly rough skies can turn even the most seasoned travelers into anxious passengers as they get jostled all the way to their destination. Unfortunately, scientists are now warning that turbulence on flights will only keep getting worse due to ongoing climate change.

RELATED: 2 of the World’s Most Turbulent Airports Are in the U.S., New Survey Shows.

A new study warns of a bumpy future for air travel.

The latest information comes from new research published in the Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences last month by scientists at the University of Reading in the U.K. Furthering some of their previous research, the team aimed to better understand how rising global temperatures could be affecting jet streams (or high-altitude air currents) that flow in the range where commercial airlines typically fly around 35,000 feet.

The scientists found that overall warming has led to stronger wind shear for pilots to contend with. Essentially, this means that wind speeds can vary at different altitudes, which can in turn create a much bumpier flight. And while nature can make some jostling inevitable, these emerging conditions are slightly different.

“Increased wind shear and reduced stability work together to create favourable conditions for clear-air turbulence—the invisible, sudden jolts that can shake aircraft without warning,” Joana Medeiros, a PhD researcher at the University of Reading and the study’s lead author, said in a press release. “Unlike turbulence caused by storms, clear-air turbulence cannot be seen on radar, making it difficult for pilots to avoid.”

Dangerously turbulent skies are becoming more common.

The latest research builds upon an earlier study conducted by the same group and published in 2023 in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

In that case, the researchers analyzed reports and found that flight routes over the North Atlantic saw a 55 percent increase in reported hours of severe turbulence, jumping from 17.7 hours in 1979 to 27.4 hours at the start of the current decade. Moderate and light turbulence were also up, increasing 37 percent and 17 percent during the same period, respectively.

The study’s authors pointed out that the increase hasn’t just resulted in passengers’ frayed nerves. The airline industry in the U.S. alone is spending $150 million to $500 million per year due to the effects, while increased exposure to turbulence increases wear and tear on aircraft, according to Mark Prosser, PhD, one of the 2023 study’s authors.

And according to National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) data, there have been 207 people hospitalized for at least two days with severe injuries caused by turbulence in the U.S. since 2009, as of July 29, 2025, the BBC reports.

RELATED: 10 Clothing Items You Shouldn’t Wear on a Plane.

What does this mean for the future of travel?

Unfortunately, the latest data paints a relatively grim picture for anxious flyers—even beyond the North Atlantic route.

“We can expect a doubling or tripling in the amount of severe turbulence around the world in the next few decades,” Paul Williams, PhD, a co-author of the study and atmospheric scientist at the University of Reading, told the BBC. “For every 10 minutes of severe turbulence experienced now, that could increase to 20 or 30 minutes.”

Of course, experts say not all of the increased turbulence will lead to serious injuries or events. But it could still noticeably change your flying experience.

“Pilots may need to keep seatbelt signs on longer and suspend cabin service more often during flights, but airlines will also need new technology to spot turbulence before it hits, protecting passengers as skies become more chaotic,” Williams said in a press release.

Throw on your favorite cozy sweater and grab a pumpkin spice latte for the road—it’s leaf-peeping season! Several regions, including the Rocky Mountains and the Midwest, are expected to hit peak foliage this month. The most beautiful places to see fall foliage this year are linked to the type of tree species in that area. So before you go mapping your fall road trip, bookmark these trees for the best views.

How to know the best fall foliage trees in your region

USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map

As Best Life previously reported, “Leaf-peeping season runs from mid-September through early November, with most regions reaching peak foliage around mid-October. Insider tip: Cities in the north, like those along the Canadian border, are typically the first to turn. As the days and weeks go by, those pops of crimson red and golden yellow will venture south.”

However, you might notice southern regions hitting peak before some cities up north. That could have to do with the types of trees planted in that area—some of which are known to produce more colorful foliage than others. This has to do with an area’s hardiness zone.

The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is divided into 13 zones based on average winter temperatures (sourced using data from 13,412 weather stations). The department uses a color-coded key to illustrate the different zones.

The 13 zones are:

  • Zone 1: light gray
  • Zone 2: gray
  • Zone 3: pink
  • Zone 4: purple
  • Zone 5: blue
  • Zone 6: green
  • Zone 7: light/yellow green
  • Zone 8: yellow
  • Zone 9: golden yellow and light orange
  • Zone 10: orange
  • Zone 11: red
  • Zone 12: dark red
  • Zone 13: red-brown

These zone maps are helpful for horticulturists, so they can best determine which tree species have the optimal chance for growth in a specific area. Come fall, you can reference the map to see where foliage will likely be most colorful.

“As sunlight decreases and cold increases, tree growth slows, and the production of green chlorophyll in leaves begins to slow, revealing fall leaves’ brilliant hues of yellow, orange, and red,” with “oak, birch, [and] beech” trees showcasing the most flamboyant hues,” explains the Old Farmer’s Almanac.

Without further ado, here are the eight best fall foliage trees to peep this autumn—plus, where you can find them based on their zone.

Where to find them: Zones 3 to 8

The award for best fall foliage goes to the sugar maple tree, whose leaves turn into a gorgeous ombré of reds, oranges, and yellows this time of year. They’re most commonly found in New York, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Vermont.

3
Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo Biloba tree with yellow leaves in the fall

Where to find them: Zones 3 to 8

According to the foundation, ginkgo biloba trees get a lot of city street cred because they “can tolerate a variety of urban conditions, including heat, pollution, salt, and confined spaces.” If you see a tree with only yellow leaves, it’s likely a ginkgo biloba.

4
Eastern Redbud

If it feels like a weather switch went off on a Labor Day, you may not be imagining things. Meteorologists say the leaves have already begun changing in several parts of the U.S., and they’re also anticipating a more “vibrant” fall foliage season compared to last year. However, as we reported, experts also say that peak foliage will be briefer in 2025—meaning you’ll want to get your leaf-peeping in sooner rather than later. To help you pinpoint your travel plans, we rounded up the best spots in the U.S. to see fall foliage this year.

1
Mt. Agamenticus, Maine

Predicted peak foliage: October 21-27

Leaf-peeping has become so popular in New England that certain locations become unpleasantly overrun with tourists in the fall. So, instead of heading to Maine’s Acadia National Park or Bar Harbor, consider planning your trip around a visit to Mt. Agamenticus.

The 3,000-acre coastal forest in southern Maine offers views stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to New Hampshire’s White Mountains, along with 40+ miles of hiking trails. According to AllTrails, the Ring Trail Loop is a particularly beautiful hike in the fall when the pine, oak, beech, and hemlock trees are changing colors.

Close by in the town of Cape Neddick is the Cliff House Maine, a luxury waterfront resort situated on the 90-foot-high Bald Head Cliff. Not only does the hotel boast its own stunning views, but it also offers guests complimentary transportation to Mt. Agamenticus through its Volvo check-out program.

To get there, you’ll drive on US 1, “which provides views of brilliant fall foliage, classic New England villages, tidal marshes, rugged cliffs, and rolling hills,” according to a representative of the hotel.

2
Santa Fe

Predicted peak foliage: Late September

New Mexico is probably not top of mind when you think of autumnal colors, but you’d be remiss not to consider Santa Fe for your fall travels.

Perhaps the best way to experience the state’s capital city is by driving along the 15-mile Santa Fe National Forest Scenic Byway. The route begins in downtown Santa Fe, where historic Pueblo architecture is backlit by glowing yellow aspen trees. It then loops through the aspen-evergreen forest, which provides vistas of “amber-tinged badlands and azure mountains,” according to the New Mexico Tourism Department.

Finally, you’ll end at the Santa Fe Ski Basin, “where chairlifts rise 1,650 vertical feet to Tesuque Peak at 12,000-feet elevation.” While here, you can hike the Aspen Vista Trail, where elk often graze in the meadows in the fall.

If you’re up for more, there are six other scenic drives in New Mexico, including two that pass through Taos, a 1,000-year-old adobe village that’s been certified a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

3
Big Bear Lake, California

An Aspen in fall color is back lit with a sun burst as it grows on the shore of Big Bear Lake in Southern California.

Predicted peak foliage: Mid-October to early November

Big Bear Lake is a resort community in the San Bernardino Mountains that claims to have 300 days of sunshine a year. Though most families visit in the winter for skiing or the summer for water activities, the fall is nothing to sneeze at.

As the city’s tourism page shares, “Hiking trails take on a magical feel with their changing aspens, maples, and oaks. The Village is a postcard come to life with fall foliage, wooden animal carvings, and twinkling lights in the evening.” Or, you can take in the views of the surrounding San Bernardino National Forest by renting a kayak or taking a boat ride on the lake.

To really appreciate the crisp mountain air and fall foliage, consider staying at Postcard Cabins Big Bear, where you’ll have your own cozy cabin in the woods, complete with an outdoor fire pit. The trees will be changing, and there’s a pond on the property where deer are known to roam around.

4
Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Ohio

Predicted peak foliage: Third week of October

Smack dab between Cleveland and Akron, Cuyahoga Valley National Park has everything you’d want out of an outdoor landscape: a winding river, lush forests, rolling hills, and open farmland. The National Park Service says the third week of October is usually when foliage peaks, but even if you can’t make it that week, there will be something to enjoy all month long.

In the early part of the month, “You can see the magnificent reds of the maple, glowing oranges of the sassafras, and striking yellows of the white ash and big tooth aspen,” when you walk along the inner loop of the Oak Hill Trail they say, adding that these vistas are especially striking in the early morning when the colors reflect off Sylvan Pond. And in late October, the hazelnut and witch hazel trees turn a vibrant yellow in the forest.

Another way to experience all this is on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, a restored train that takes visitors through the national park.

There are some accommodations near the park, but for a more luxe stay, the Fidelity Hotel in Downtown Cleveland is less than 30 minutes away. It’s housed in a historic building and was designed with an elegant yet cozy aesthetic that screams autumn.

5
Asheville, North Carolina

Predicted peak foliage: Mid- to late-October

Asheville made headlines last year when it was pummeled by Hurricane Helene. Visiting the vibrant arts city this fall is not only a way to support its economy, but it’s also the perfect way to see fall colors. Even better, Dollar Flight Club recently ranked Asheville as the number-one most affordable fall foliage destination this year.

“Asheville in peak foliage season is one of my favorite fall getaways in the U.S.,” said Dollar Flight Club’s CEO Jesse Neugarten. “The mountain air, sweeping Blue Ridge views, and a surprisingly great food and drink scene make it a perfect mix of nature and culture, all for as low as $170 round-trip.”

Fellow travel experts highly recommend leaf peeping via the adjacent Blue Ridge Parkway. “This scenic route takes you past incredible, colorful views during fall, with countless spots to stop to take in the scenery, spend time in nature, and hang out in charming mountain towns. My go-to route is Brevard, Bryson City, Asheville, and Blowing Rock, with as many stops as possible along the way,” travel writer Polly Clover previously told Best Life.

And while you’re in Asheville, don’t forget to schedule a tour of the Biltmore Estate, a Gilded Age mansion that was once home to the Vanderbilts. The 8,000 acres of grounds offer their own fall foliage views.

6
Hudson Valley, New York

Predicted peak foliage: Mid- to late-October

The Hudson Valley region was just crowned the number-one fall foliage destination, according to search data compiled by Priceline for Travel + Leisure.

The magazine says these are four of the best spots for leaf peeping:

They also list some popular towns to visit: Catskill, Beacon, Hudson, Woodstock, and Rhinebeck. Kingston is another lovely town, with cute shops and restaurants along the Hudson River. Here, you can stay at the Hutton Brickyards, a riverfront hotel spread across a Second Empire historic mansion and modern outdoor cabins.

7
Door County, Wisconsin

aerial view of a lighthouse in Sturgeon Bay Door County Wisconsin during fall and autumn colors.

Predicted peak foliage: Late-September to mid-October

Wisconsin’s Door County comes alive in the summer months when Midwestern vacationers arrive at the more than 300 miles of shoreline along Lake Michigan and Green Bay. In fact, the region is known as the “Cape Cod of the Midwest.” But the autumn months are just as spectacular.

For an unforgettable experience, we suggest making the small town of Sturgeon Bay your home base. “It provides visitors a step back in time as they walk through a downtown filled with shops, taverns, restaurants, and businesses in a city that was founded in 1883,” Jon Jarosh of Destination Door County previously told Best Life.

Just outside town is Potawatomi State Park, a 1,200-acre waterfront park highlighted by its rugged limestone cliffs. If you’ve got it in you to climb the 75 feet to the top of the observation tower, you’ll be treated to an awe-inspiring view of the lakes and leaves.

Jarosh recommends booking a room at The White Lace Inn, a historic bed and breakfast filled with antiques and surrounded by lovely gardens.

The post 5 Major Delta Changes Happening Now, And How They’ll Affect Travelers appeared first on Best Life.

]]>
Whether it’s finding a good deal on a flight, checking a bag, or getting through security quickly, your travel experience can often depend on which airline you choose to fly. Now, Delta has announced a series of major changes that will affect travelers. Here’s what you can expect from the airline in the coming months.

RELATED: 4 Major United Airlines Changes, and How They’ll Affect Travelers.

1
You could pass through security more quickly.

Travelers placing their items and luggage through an airport security checkpoint x-ray machine

For decades, getting through airport security has been a long, cumbersome, and often frustrating experience. But thanks to new technology, getting to your next flight could be a breeze if you’re traveling with Delta.

In an August 13 press release, the carrier announced that it will soon expand its TSA PreCheck Touchless ID to all of its hub airports and “select stations” by the end of 2025. Delta originally launched the service in 2021 in partnership with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) as Delta Digital ID.

According to the airline, the technology streamlines the security process and helps travelers get through checkpoints as much as 60 percent faster than those screening with traditional TSA PreCheck credentials. This is largely thanks to automated ID verification using facial recognition that cuts down processing time to seven to 10 seconds.

To take advantage of the expedited service, travelers will need to be an enrolled TSA PreCheck member and store their passport information and their assigned Known Traveler Number (KTN) in their Delta profile. You’ll also have to be enrolled as a Delta SkyMiles loyalty member and have downloaded the Fly Delta app onto your phone. Anyone eligible will receive a notification to opt in to the service when they check in for a flight on their devices.

2
Checking bags is getting easier.

Passengers check in with luggage for flight to New York JFK at the Delta Air Lines desk in Tegel Airport, the main international airport of the capital of Germany.

Having to check your luggage before a flight can make the already lengthy trip to your gate an even longer one. However, you can save precious time if you’re flying with Delta.

In the same August 13 press release, the airline announced it was adding the “App Bag Drop” experience at select airports. Travelers who check in on the app and just need to print their luggage tags will be able to skip the traditional lines with their own dedicated drop-off point to save time.

Can’t wait to drop and go? The service is already available at Atlanta Hartfield International Airport (ATL), Boston Logan Airport (BOS), Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), and Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (SEA). It will be rolled out to the rest of Delta’s hub airports by the end of 2025.

3
And getting them to your final destination will be simpler, too.

A woman standing in the airport holding her phone and passport

Some travelers will also have to spend less time ferrying their bags around. Delta announced that international travelers flying from Incheon International Airport (ICN) in South Korea to ATL (including those on Korean Air flights) and Delta customers flying from London Heathrow (LHR) to ATL will no longer have to claim their baggage stateside and recheck it before boarding a connecting flight.

Instead, their luggage will pass seamlessly through to their final destination, saving them as much as 25 minutes during their layover.

That’s not the only new benefit: Travelers arriving at ATL from LHR will also no longer have to pass through a security checkpoint again once they’ve arrived in the U.S. and can instead carry on to their connecting gate. Passengers will need to be enrolled in the Global Entry program or use Mobile Passport Control to qualify.

Delta addressed controversial AI ticket pricing rumors.

Hand holding a phone with Delta Airlines flight booking application. Delta logo blurred on a blue background. Delta Airlines is one of the major airlines in the US

Last month, Delta generated some significant online outrage when airline president Glen Hauenstein said on an earnings call that there were plans to increase the use of AI to make airfare pricing decisions to 20 percent of the carrier’s domestic network by the end of 2025, travel news website The Points Guy reported.

Previously, the airline had said it was using the technology to determine only roughly 1 percent of its flights within the U.S.

In a letter sent by U.S. Senators Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), Mark Warner (D-MD), and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), lawmakers expressed concerns about the changes, including the lack of clear safeguards or protection from potential individual discrimination.

“Delta’s current and planned individualized pricing practices not only present data privacy concerns but will also likely mean fare price increases up to each individual consumer’s personal ‘pain point’ at a time when American families are already struggling with rising costs,” they wrote.

In response, Delta clarified what it says was “misinformation” about its use of AI in a letter penned by Peter Carter, chief external affairs officer for Delta.

“There is no fare product Delta has ever used, is testing, or plans to use that targets customers with individualized prices based on personal data,” he explained. “Furthermore, we have zero tolerance for discriminatory or predatory pricing and fully comply with applicable laws in privacy, pricing, and advertising. Our AI-powered pricing functionality is designed to enhance our existing fare pricing processes using aggregated data. This technology is a decision-support tool that simply provides informed insights for our analysts, who oversee and fine-tune the recommendations to ensure they are consistent with our business strategy.”

Carter also clarified that customers are not required to log in to the airline’s website to compare pricing. He explained that the technology was helpful in pricing analysis that would allow employees to focus on other high-priority tasks.

Alternatively, he explained that Delta was using AI in other helpful ways, including as a tool for reservations specialists faced with complex questions, tech ops planning for maintenance and scheduling reliability, and crew scheduling to help plan and anticipate absences and necessary replacements.

Best Life has reached out to Delta for further clarification on the company’s use of AI, and we will update this story with any response.

5
The airline is cutting back some of its flight schedule.

Delta Air Lines planes at an airport

You might have fewer booking options if you’re planning to fly with Delta from New York City during the cooler months. Last week, the airline announced it would be cutting back its flight schedule from John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) and LaGuardia Airport (LGA) by 16 percent in January and 19 percent in February, The Points Guy reports. The Big Apple airports will also see a 10 percent reduction in November, December, March, and April.

While the carrier isn’t outright dropping any routes during what it calls the “deep winter” season, there will be a dip in frequency for some locations. According to The Points Guy, cities such as Des Moines, Iowa; Wilmington, North Carolina; and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina will drop to once-daily flights from their current three departures per day.

Besides a decrease in demand, Delta is also scaling back due to a decision from regulators at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that would allow it to hold on to its highly coveted takeoff and landing slots at the New York airports with a usage waiver extension. Typically, carriers must use the time blocks or risk having them put back up for bidding by competitors.

“Following the FAA’s extension of the NYC slot utilization waiver through Summer 2026, Delta is making select adjustments to our winter schedule at LaGuardia (LGA) and John F. Kennedy (JFK) airports,” a Delta spokesperson told The Points Guy. “We apologize for any inconvenience that these schedule changes may cause. Delta remains committed to minimizing travel disruptions while ensuring a smooth transition for all impacted travelers.”

Passengers will fight tooth and nail, even pay an exorbitant fee, to secure an aisle seat on an airplane. However, travel experts argue that overhead bin space is even more sought-after than a cushioned seat with extra leg room. On a full flight, a spot for your carry-on bag can be hard to come by. Here’s what the pros recommend doing to secure yourself a spot.

RELATED: Saying These Two Secret Words Will Get You an Instant Airline Upgrade.

Opt in for priority boarding to secure an overhead bin space for your carry-on bag.

If you’re in the last boarding zone, the likelihood that there’s still overhead bin space by the time you get on the jet bridge is pretty slim. However, depending on your travel plans, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

In the case of a short layover, it may benefit you to have your bag checked to your final destination. Even if there’s still overhead bin space towards the back of the plane, that could be a major setback (in terms of time) for someone who’s seated near the front of the plane.

Conversely, those with longer layovers might be swayed to check their carry-on if it means they don’t have to lug it around at the next airport—or worry about their next plane also running out of overhead space. Plus, when a gate agent checks your carry on it’s free!

However, many travelers would argue that they’d rather keep their carry-on in the cabin within arm’s reach.

So if you have a tight layover, or simply don’t want to fight your way through baggage claim, it might be worth splurging on priority boarding to ensure there’s still overhead bin space when it’s your turn to board the aircraft.

An early boarding upgrade is “basically the race to get our carry-on suitcase in the overhead bins,” Henry Harteveldt, founder of the travel industry market research and advisory firm Atmosphere Research Group, told CNBC.

NerdWallet travel expert Sally French added, “If overhead space is important to you, you do need to pay for priority boarding.”

This extra expense will vary by airline as well as flight duration, according to French. You may have the option to purchase early boarding at the time of booking or in the days leading up to your flight.

Here is how the price of early boarding stacks up among popular airline carriers.

Alternatively, you can try to boost your boarding zone by applying for a travel credit card. Harteveldt noted that airline credit cards usually come with additional perks and can accelerate your elite status, which should move up your place in line.

Three dos and don’ts of carry-on bags, according to flight attendants.

If you’re among the first to board and don’t have a carry-on suitcase, flight attendants advise keeping personal belongings, including jackets and purses, at your feet until everyone is seated.

“So many passengers place all of their belongings in the overhead just to free up the area at their feet for legroom, and that creates an overhead space issue,” Las Vegas-based flight attendant Karina Kay told Condé Nast Traveler. “Of course we all want to be comfortable and stretch out, but hold on to your personal items until boarding is completed. Give others with larger carry-ons a chance to place their baggage, then place yours in the surrounding space.”

Moreover, if you’re one of the last passengers to board and there’s empty overhead bin space in the premium economy cabin, ask a flight attendant if it’s okay to stow your carry-on, even if you have a main cabin ticket.

“An open spot is an open spot, especially at the end of the boarding process,” Los-Angeles flight attendant Ingrid Imperiale, who primarily works the first class cabin, told Condé Nast Traveler. “If all of the premium passengers are seated, and their bags are put away, I don’t see a problem with it.”

Lastly, try to only use the overhead bin space that’s near your seat. In the event that a flight attendant has to remove or relocate a bag, it makes the process easier on everyone.

You missed your flight: Now what? You’ll have to stand in line at the airport or try to get an airline representative on the phone to reschedule. The change may cost you significantly more money and could also upend your entire trip. But alas, it was your own fault for being late, right? Not necessarily. A Delta flight attendant is speaking out on how airlines trick you into missing your flight. Keep reading for her insider info and to ensure you never fall victim to this ploy.

“Delayed” doesn’t always mean delayed—especially on Delta flights.

In a TikTik video, flight attendant @tay_shearer advises travelers to always get to the airport in time for their scheduled departure—even if the airline says the flight is delayed.

“I don’t care how many hours it’s delayed. They may very well still take off at the same time,” she explains. “For example, today, I worked a flight, got the call in the morning it was delayed two-and-a-half hours, got another call an hour later, what do you know, we took off on time.”

The flight attendant also implies that this could be more of an issue with Delta, which she refers to as “an on-time airline.”

And this isn’t just anecdotal. As reported by Condé Nast Traveler, aviation analytics company Cirium found that in 2024, Delta was the punctual U.S. airline, with an on-time rate of 83.46 percent.

But it happens across airlines.

The flight attendant from TikTok is far from the only one who’s found this to be a problem.

Previously, Summer Hull, the director of content for travel and finance website The Points Guy, missed her flight from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston to Newark Liberty International Airport after showing up on time for a “delayed” United flight.

“I packed up to head back to the gate about 30-35 minutes before the posted (delayed) departure time, mostly expecting to be greeted with a longer delay since there hadn’t been any boarding notices or updates,” she shared. “Instead, I was greeted with something very different: a gate devoid of passengers and crew.”

Hull received no notifications of the moved-up departure time: “Presumably, those who remained in the gate area or returned to the gate earlier than I did got on the flight. Anyone else was out of luck.”

A family flying from Guatemala City to Detroit on Spirit Airlines had a similar experience, as one of the travelers recounted to The New York Times.

“I received two texts from Spirit announcing that our flight was delayed, first by about 20 minutes and then by an additional 15, making the new departure time 4:18 p.m.,” they wrote. “We used the delay to get something to eat, monitoring our phones for more updates, but none came. When we returned to our gate at 3:40, we were told the plane had been readied earlier than expected and the doors had closed.”

In response, the NYT advice columnist Seth Kugel shared that he reached out to a Spirit spokesperson who directed him to “section 2.4.1 (b)” of the airline’s Contract of Carriage.

“In the event of a delay, guests are recommended to remain in the gate area for updates and possible early departures,” he copied from the contract. “Spirit shall not be liable to any guest who misses a flight, which departed earlier than the estimated departure time posted for the delay.”

Here’s how to hedge your bets:

A man looking at an airline departure board with his hands behind his head

If you do receive a notification that your flight was delayed and don’t want to get to the airport for the original departure time, there are some things to consider.

Since “on-time” is within a 15-minute window, it’s generally considered good practice to get to the airport as usual if your posted delay is one hour or less. However, Erika Richter, a spokesperson for the American Society of Travel Advisors, told The Washington Post that she recommends doing so for delays of two hours or less.

“Airlines try to work quickly to resolve delays, and it’s quite possible your flight could leave earlier if the issue is resolved,” she said.

Max Barrus, vice president of planning and revenue at Breeze Airways, told WaPo that travelers should also be extra mindful of “the creeping delay,” or one that keeps changing by small increments.

“Maybe you got a text or an alert that your flight would be delayed by 15 minutes, and then a few minutes later that delay was extended to 30, and that delay was extended further,” he explained. “It may be OK to give yourself a few extra minutes, but don’t be lazy about it. The airline is going to try to do all it can once that plane gets to your destination.”

9 Pro Tips to Track Your Lost Luggage With AirTags https://bestlifeonline.com/track-lost-luggage-with-air-tags/ Thu, 31 Jul 2025 18:27:04 +0000 https://bestlifeonline.com/track-lost-luggage-with-air-tags/ If you’re flying this summer or heading into the busy fall travel season, one essential...

The post 9 Pro Tips to Track Your Lost Luggage With AirTags appeared first on Best Life.

]]>
If you’re flying this summer or heading into the busy fall travel season, one essential you won’t want to forget is a luggage tracker. In fact, travel pros say Apple AirTags have become the ultimate hack for avoiding travel disasters and lost baggage, especially as airlines continue to deal with staffing shortages, delays, and increased lost items reports.

Whether you’re a frequent flyer or planning your first big trip in years, here are the top expert-recommended tips for using AirTags to track your luggage, speed up recovery, and travel with confidence.

RELATED: The #1 Thing to Do Before Checking Your Luggage (Spoiler: It Could Save You $1000s)

1
Pick the right tracker for you.

packing a carry-on bag

While it’s super-popular, Apple’s AirTag isn’t the only option on the market for travelers who want to keep an eye on their bags.

There are also options for those with Android phones, including Tile and Samsung trackers, that might be better suited for your needs. Some can even be recharged.

Usually, the type of smartphone you have will dictate the best option for you.

2
Track your bags before they’re even missing.

An AirTag is seen being connected to an iPhone.

Once a tracker is activated, it will regularly beam their location to your phone. This means you’ll always have tabs on it—even before something goes wrong. In a discussion on the r/TravelHacks subreddit, many frequent flyers vouched for these gadgets’ effectiveness, saying AirTags and the like regularly check on the status of their luggage while en route.

“I always plan for carry-on, but have been forced to gate check more than once,” one user wrote. “Sometimes it takes a while for the AirTag to update, but by the time I’m walking to a connecting gate or to baggage claim, I can tell that my bag made it to the same airport as me.”

In some cases, knowing where your mishandled bags are can actually help salvage the rest of your trip.

“Air Tags helped me know what action I needed to take when my luggage wasn’t on the carousel in Madrid,” another Redditor wrote. “The Air Tags showed the bag was still in Paris, so I knew (1) I might as well leave the airport and enjoy myself, (2) it hadn’t been taken accidentally by another passenger, and (3) I was gonna need a toothbrush and some deodorant, but probably didn’t need to go buy new clothes (and I was right—it came the next day).”

3
Don’t attach them to the outside of your luggage.

AirTags and other trackers are really tiny, which makes them easy to stash practically anywhere that’s convenient. However, in another discussion on the r/TravelHacks subreddit, one traveler says it’s vital to keep them inside your luggage.

“I wouldn’t recommend using a keychain attachment on the outside,” they warn. “Keychains won’t stop bags from being stolen. Thieves will just take them off and toss them in the trash if they know they’re there,” which includes travel totes like crossbody bags, purses, and day packs.

4
Use a secure pocket to hide your AirTag.

While you want your tracker inside the bag, don’t just toss it in loosely. Instead, secure it in a zipped inner pocket.

That way, if you store your luggage for a few weeks or months until your next trip, you’ll know exactly where your tracker is when it’s time to jetset again.

5
Don’t forget your carry-ons and totes.

Unfortunately, it’s not just your checked luggage that can go missing when traveling. AirTags can be vital for relocating carry-on bags, purses, backpacks, and more that might also suddenly disappear.

One Reddit user says this is why they have Air Tags on all the items they take with them on trips. “Once somebody took my carry-on, I was notified when it was away from me, and I was able to retrieve it,” they wrote.

6
Add your contact info to your AirTag.

Adding your name, email, or phone number to the AirTag’s settings means whoever finds your luggage can use their phone to get your contact info—without accessing your personal data.

Many travelers don’t realize you can make your AirTag’s ‘Lost Mode’ message something helpful, like “If found, please call/text me at [your number],” experts say.

Just go to the Find My app, tap the AirTag, and enable Lost Mode to customize.

7
Be sure to maintain the device.

apple airtags closeup

For better or worse, most Apple products typically require a daily recharge to stay working. However, AirTags don’t have the same capability and need a little more attention. That means you’ll have to physically swap out the batteries on the trackers roughly once a year, depending on how frequently you use the trackers and the quality of batteries you use, Wired reports.

Fortunately, you won’t have to guess when it’s time for a replacement: The trackers will alert you whenever batteries start running low on juice, hopefully giving you enough time to swap them out before your next trip.

8
Work with your airline to find your tracker.

Inside Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, passengers use the American Airlines self-serve check-in kiosks within terminal B/C. American Airlines is the fifth largest airline in the United States.

In November 2024, over 15 major airline carriers announced they would “begin accepting Find My item locations as part of their customer service process for locating mishandled or delayed bags,” according to Apple.

“Find My is an essential tool for users around the world to keep track of and find their belongings,” Eddy Cue, senior vice president of services at Apple, said at the time. “The Find My network and AirTag have proven to be a powerful combination for users while traveling, providing invaluable location information when bags have been misplaced or mishandled. With Share Item Location, we’re excited to give users a new way to easily share this information directly with third parties like airlines, all while protecting their privacy.”

Participating airlines include Aer Lingus, Air Canada, Air New Zealand, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Eurowings, Iberia, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Lufthansa, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, Turkish Airlines, United, Virgin Atlantic, and Vueling, and more.

9
Use a lost bag service or insurance.

Luggage With Lost Tag

Sometimes, even knowing precisely where your bag is won’t be enough to get it back quickly. And when airlines continually drop the ball on logistics, that’s when a lost bag concierge service can come in handy.

Companies like Blue Ribbon Bags specialize in dealing with the higher-ups at airlines to help reunite travelers with their lost luggage. Being able to hand over your suitcases’ location can help the company expedite delivery even faster, NerdWallet reports.

And if you’ve opted to pay for insurance ahead of time, you can similarly use information from your AirTag to streamline the process with the insurance company’s help.

Otherwise, knowing where your bags are can still be helpful when communicating directly with the airlines. Just be sure to try and connect with a human customer service representative and not an automated system you’ll often find built into an airline’s app, NerdWallet suggests.

Imagine this: After a steaming hot shower in your hotel room, you cozy up in a complimentary plush robe and cue up the TV with an assortment of minibar snacks to keep you company… only to wake up from your peaceful slumber to clusters of inflamed, itchy red bumps all over your arms and legs. It quickly becomes apparent that the hotel room was already occupied long before you checked in. And now, you’re stuck with a serious case of bed bugs.

Bed bugs are the stuff of hotel nightmares. And as summer travel heats up, doctors and pest control experts are sounding the alarm about how common they can be.

While most travelers know to check a hotel room’s mattress, one viral TikTok is warning that there’s another spot these bloodsucking pests love—and it might be the first place you unpack your clothes.

RELATED: These Smells Could Mean You Have Bed Bugs, Pest Experts Say

Where Bed Bugs Could Be Hiding in a Hotel Room

Primary care physician Jason Singh, MD, alerted his TikTok followers in a June 2024 video of other places these pesky critters may be lurking—and how you can beat them at their own game.

“So, how many of you completely unpack your clothes from your suitcases into a hotel dresser?” asks Dr. Singh before revealing that “hotel dressers, especially those that are made of wood or have joints and crevices, are a risk for bed bug infestation.”

“It’s not just beds that have bed bugs; hotel dressers can have them, too,” he reiterates.

While hotel furniture gets a quick wipe down in between guests, Dr. Singh explains that the actual hinges, tracks, and drawers in the dresser aren’t being “readily cleaned.” If there is a bed bug infestation brewing, you and your clothes could be at serious risk.

How to Avoid These Areas

An easy way to protect yourself against bed bugs is by skipping the dresser altogether and taking advantage of the closet, according to Dr. Singh.

“I recommend to utilize hotel closets or hanging spaces to store your clothes or just pull your clothes straight out of your suitcase,” he says in the clip.

Likewise, Anthony O’Neill, a pest expert with more than 20 years in the industry, previously told Best Life that the safest place to stow your luggage is the hotel bath or shower. “Bed bugs cannot climb smooth surfaces and you’d easily spot a bed bug in a light-colored bath,” he explained.

Travelers Share Their Own Tips

In the comments section of Dr. Singh’s video, hundreds of TikTokers chimed in with their own anti-bed bug rituals:

  • “Keep your suitcase in the bathtub and get your clothes that you need from it,” one retired pest control operator confirmed.
  • “Nope, stays in the suitcase. I use a trash bag for dirty clothes and go straight to the washer after the trip,” another said.
  • “I never unpack anything, even in luxury hotels,” one user added.
  • “I always bring alcohol spray and mist the drawers and bed every night,” someone else shared.

Why Bed Bugs are a Big Hotel Room Risk

While bed bugs are not known to transmit disease, their bites can lead to itching, skin irritation, allergic reactions, and expensive home extermination bills if they hitch a ride back with you.

They’re most commonly found in the mattress, as they “prefer to hide in close proximity to their hosts, so they can sneak out at night and draw a blood meal without being noticed,” Nancy Troyano, PhD, a board-certified entomologist with Ehrlich Pest Control, previously told Best Life.

You should also avoid wooden dressers, keep your luggage elevated or in the bathroom, and think twice before unpacking into any hidden crevices.

]]>
Imagine walking up to the rental car desk expecting the standard economy vehicle—but driving off in a sleek sedan or roomy SUV instead. Surprisingly, all it takes is saying the right phrase. In 2025, savvy travelers are learning that the secret to scoring a free or discounted rental car upgrade isn’t bartering or begging—it’s strategically using two magic words: “loyalty status.”

According to frequent travelers and experts, mentions like this can quickly signal to desk agents that you might be a repeat customer or are enrolled in their rewards program—giving them an easy reason to elevate your ride. Here’s why this tactic works and how to make it work for you.

RELATED: Saying These Two Secret Words Will Get You an Instant Airline Upgrade

Why This Phrase Works

Rental car companies like Enterprise, Hertz, and Budget all offer free-to-join loyalty programs, and their systems flag members at check-in. When availability allows, employees are trained to prioritize upgrades for loyalty members to build customer satisfaction and brand loyalty.

Many programs, such as Hertz Gold Plus Rewards and National Emerald Club, offer different tiers with varying upgrade benefits.

Or, you can check your credit card, such as Chase Sapphire Reserve or American Express Platinum, and its list of perks to see if they offer complimentary car rental elite status or specific benefits that can lead to a free bump up, according to Final Rentals.

What to Say at the Counter

Keep it simple: “Hi, I have loyalty status with you—do you have any upgrades available today?”

This line shows confidence and lets the agent know you’re informed. Even if you’re not a frequent renter, your name in their loyalty system may be enough to tip the scales.

Plus, as Redditors confirm, being nice to the desk agent can also up your odds.

RELATED: Saying These Two Secret Words Will Get You an Instant Hotel Room Upgrade

How to Maximize Your Rental Car Upgrade Odds

Car rental agent handing over car keys to a customer.

If you’re hoping to level up your rental without paying more, here’s how to play it smart:

  • Join the loyalty program before you rent. Membership is usually free and takes just a few minutes. Even first-timers can benefit, and you may even be able to skip the counter when picking up your vehicle, Thrillist says.
  • Book an economy car. If lower-tier cars are sold out when you arrive, you may be upgraded by necessity.
  • Look for online discount codes. For instance, Budget currently has a free upgrade coupon that expires Dec. 31, 2025.
  • Pick up your car later in the day, advises Booking.com. By then, most economy cars are already taken—leaving larger or higher-end vehicles more available.
  • Travel midweek or during off-peak times. Fewer customers means more flexibility for agents to offer upgrades.
  • Be friendly and confident. A polite and positive attitude goes a long way when asking about upgrades.

Bottom line: Scoring a free car upgrade isn’t just for frequent renters who’ve logged hundreds of miles. These days, anyone can unlock a better car just by mentioning “loyalty status” at the counter—including you.

Out of all U.S. cities, Orlando ranks eighth in having the most mosquitoes, according to a recent report from Terminix. In fact, the state of Florida comes in third overall behind Texas and California. “Warm temperatures, high humidity, and ample breeding grounds create an ideal environment for mosquitoes to thrive,” states the report.

So, how, then, does Disney World, located smack dab in the middle of Orlando, with plenty of water features, have absolutely no mosquitoes to speak of? The reason is pretty unbelievable.

RELATED: 20 Secrets Disney Park Employees Never Tell You.

How Disney World stays mosquito-free.

In a recent TikTok video, Disney influencer @disney_dad1 shares the “genius” hack behind Disney World’s lack of mosquitoes.

When Walt Disney was designing the theme park in the mid-1960s, he hired an entomologist, or a scientist who studies insects, to design a way to keep mosquitoes out without affecting the guest experience, according to @disney_dad1.

“First, Disney doesn’t let water sit still,” he explains. “No standing puddles. Everything drains fast. Fountains flow constantly. Even decorative moats have circulation.”

In another video, he points out that even the buildings and landscapes are designed to discourage standing water: “Gutters, roofs, and walkways are built to drain water.”

Why is this important? “Mosquitos are attracted to standing water because it is a stable environment where their eggs can develop and hatch,” Diana LudwiczakNYC-certified bed bug and pest inspector and founder of Doctor Sniffs Bed Bug Dogs, previously told Best Life. “The larvae need still water to survive, so standing pools of water are ideal breeding grounds.”

Next, @disney_dad1 says that Disney World staff “lightly spray the parks with a garlic-based repellent.”

Garlic is often used in natural mosquito-repellent products since the bugs hate the scent, but it’s not perceptible to human noses. It’s also non-toxic.

Finally, @disney_dad1 shares that Disney World is home to many “natural predators” that ward off mosquitoes. This includes dragonflies, birds, and even bats at night.

“Disney basically created a little ecosystem where mosquitoes lose every time,” he says.

This is just one hidden aspect of Disney World.

Like @disney_dad1 notes, perhaps the most amazing part of Disney’s anti-mosquito infrastructure is that it’s all completely hidden from guests—just like the secret trash tunnels.

The “trash tunnels” are actually part of Disney’s state-of-the-art Automated Vacuum Collection System (AVCS). The blog World of Walt explains that these “underground corridors” actually run through the first level of Disney World, whereas guests are walking on the second level.

The AVACS has “17 collection points around Magic Kingdom and an underground system of vacuum tubes,” they say. “Every 15 minutes, trash is sucked at a speedy 60 miles per hour to a compactor located behind Splash Mountain. Here it is compressed and then removed from [the] property.”

The post Experts Warn to Avoid These 5 Items When Traveling If You’re Over 65 appeared first on Best Life.

]]>
Whether you’re jetting off to see grandkids, road-tripping across the country, or embarking on that bucket-list cruise, travel should be a joy—not a pain in the neck (or feet). But if you’re over 65, what you wear during transit matters more than you might think.

Health professionals say certain wardrobe choices can increase your risk of discomfort, infection, or even injury while on the move. And with the summer travel season heating up, now’s the perfect time to reevaluate your go-to outfits. Read on for the five clothing items experts say older adults should leave at home—and what to pack instead for a safer, more comfortable journey.

RELATED: 40 Essential Items to Buy for a Cruise

1
Unsafe footwear

close up of woman's feet in flip flops

Your choice of footwear can greatly impact your comfort and safety while traveling, especially if you’re over 65, experts say.

Amanda Weeks MS, OTR/L, an occupational therapist with a concentration in older adults working with B. Well Health, says that in particular, you should plan to avoid flip-flops and backless footwear any time you take to the road.

“These types of shoes can contribute to an unstable gait, increasing the likelihood of trips and falls, which could be particularly dangerous for older adults with reduced balance and stability. Opting for more supportive footwear with better traction can help reduce the risk of falling or injury,” she explains.

Similarly, high-heeled shoes can put you at risk while traveling, says Daniel Morris, founder of My Caring Plan. “Stability is critical for senior safety. They can have a sprain or turn an ankle due to high heels, shoes, or sandals. Flat shoes or shoes with a slight, wide heel are a safer choice. Opt for non-slip shoes or shoes with an excellent grip to reduce the risk of falls and slips,” he says.

2
Shapewear

Another clothing item to avoid while traveling is shapewear, says Nancy Mitchell, RN, a registered nurse and a contributing writer at Assisted Living. In particular, she warns against garments made of Lycra and Spandex.

“Wearing them for extended periods can reduce the flow of blood and fluids throughout your lower body. If you
suffer from diabetes and other circulatory issues, this could put you at risk for edema (severe swelling),” she says.

Mitchell adds that wearing Spandex or similar materials can also increase your risk of yeast infections and rashes.

“Older adults have highly sensitive skin and are more prone to skin irritations. Traveling may demand a lot of walking and activities which produce heat. When that heat festers in moist areas, like the groin and skin folds, this increases your likelihood of developing microbial infections or aggravating issues you may already have,” she explains.

3
Ill-fitting or hard-to-manage clothes

Packing, Travel

Morris says that ill-fitting clothes are best avoided while traveling. Too-tight clothing can lead to discomfort, restricted movement, and poor circulation, while loose and baggy clothes can pose a tripping hazard.

“It’s better to wear well-fitting clothes that allow free movement without the risk of tripping. Comfortable, breathable clothing that is not too tight or too loose is the way to go,” he says.

Weeks adds that you should also skip any clothing item that’s hard to put on or take off. “Older adults should avoid wearing difficult-to-manage clothing while traveling, as it’s often difficult locating a bathroom quickly in a new place. Complicated outfits with multiple layers, clasps, or small buttons can be time-consuming to remove, causing unnecessary stress in urgent situations,” she says.

4
Heavy jewelry and dangling accessories

Weeks also advises leaving your heavy jewelry at home when you travel—especially if you’re over 65.

“Not only can it be lost or stolen during travel, but it can also cause discomfort over time. For example, older people can experience neck pain from a heavy necklace during a day-long tour,” she says.

Similarly, dangling accessories can pose an accident risk if your scarf or necklace becomes entangled while on your neck. For optimal travel safety, stick to minimal jewelry and accessories.

5
Uncomfortable or ill-fitting masks

If you choose to wear a mask while in transit on a plane, train, or bus, make sure it’s a well-fitting one.

“Uncomfortable masks can cause breathing difficulties, while ill-fitting ones may lead to skin irritation and reduced effectiveness,” says Jennifer Silver, DDS, a dentist practicing with Macleod Trail Dental.

“Opt for breathable materials and adjustable ear loops for a snug fit. Avoid constant adjustments that increase contamination risks,” she says.

We’re in the thick of summer travel season, so if you’re boarding a plane anytime soon, make sure to allow yourself ample time to check luggage, get through airport security, and snag a pre-flight snack. One airline that’s having a particularly busy summer is United.

According to a CNN report, United is expecting to shepherd roughly 50 million passengers between June and August. Moreover, the airline recently rolled out several new changes to its on-ground transportation offerings, check-in curfew, and mobile app. Get the scoop here.

Some United-Landline routes are going away.

Starting on July 31, Landline is cutting two popular United routes. Landline, which launched in 2019, provides ground transportation for passengers between international and regional airports. The bus operator serves small city airports within 200 miles of a major hub. United was the second airline to partner with Landline.

The affected United routes include:

  • Between Denver International Airport (DEN) and Northern Colorado Regional Airport (FNL)
  • Between Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE)

Nicholas Johnson, vice president and head of revenue at Landline, confirmed the closures in a statement to The Points Guy (TPG). According to Johnson, the shift allows the company to “focus on other opportunities.”

A United spokesperson corroborated that statement, revealing that Landine is “pursuing other opportunities.” It’s unclear whether United will partner with another bus operator to replace Landline. The EWR to ABE route will terminate on Sept. 1, 2025.

According to TPG, Sun Country Airlines and American Airlines are also Landline partners.

New features are coming to the United app.

The United app just got a snazzy makeover. The airline is rolling out a series of new features centered around its ConnectionSaver tool, which “uses artificial intelligence to identify flights that can be held for connecting passengers without delaying the on-time arrival of those already boarded,” per a news release.

According to United, the ConnectionSaver Tool has saved over 3.3 million flight connections since its 2019 launch. The new features—including live flight updates and in-airport navigation—earned a 98 percent success rate during its beta phase earlier this year. That included trials from over 350,000 passengers.

Here are the new United app features, as outlined by the airline:

  • Countdown Timer: A real-time countdown to boarding for the connecting flight.
  • Turn-by-Turn Directions: Customized gate-to-gate navigation with estimated walking times.
  • Flight Status Updates: Live updates on flight schedules and gate changes.
  • Layover Tips: Suggestions for longer layovers, such as directions to United ClubSM locations or dining options.
  • ConnectionSaver Notifications: Alerts if United’s AI-powered ConnectionSaver technology is holding a flight for the customer.

“Providing clear, real-time information helps reduce the stress of connecting flights. Our award-winning app is transforming travel, giving customers more control and a better experience with United,” remarked David Kinzelman, United’s chief customer officer.

United is also expanding its Latin and Caribbean route offerings. Come Dec. 20, United passengers will be able to fly nonstop from George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) to Tepic International Airport (TPQ), located near the Riviera Nayarit coast in Mexico, as reported by TPG.

Additionally, United will soon offer a route from DEN to Mexico City International Airport (MEX), and DEN to Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). These go into effect in late October.

United changed its check-in time curfew.

    united airlines Departures Board

In case you missed it: United just updated its check-in time limits for domestic flights—and not following the new rules could result in no airport entry.

Previous guidelines stated that all domestic passengers without checked luggage could check in for their flight up to 30 minutes before takeoff. However, United has since upped the check-in cutoff time by an additional 15 minutes.

This means that all passengers flying within the U.S. must now check into their flight at least 45 minutes before departure.

“The change brings greater consistency for our customers by aligning with our current checked baggage deadline and the check-in policies followed by most other airlines,” a United Airlines spokesperson told Travel + Leisure.

Check-in time limits for United international flights remain the same: 60 minutes before departure.

If you try to check in past curfew, you won’t receive a boarding pass, which means you won’t be able to go through airport security, let alone be allowed to board the plane.

United’s website says, “If you don’t meet your check-in time limits, we’ll do our best to find another option. However, we have the right to deny service which may result in cancellation of your reservation, denied boarding or the option to check your bags.”

Open 24/7 since 1939 (yes, even during blizzards), Mickey’s Diner is a streamlined Art Deco icon that’s fed everyone from late-night locals to The Mighty Ducks cast.

This narrow, train car-style spot is listed on the National Register of Historic Places—and the short-order cooks are masters of the flat-top. Don’t miss their crispy corned beef hash or fluffy hotcakes, and be sure to bring cash. Mickey’s is more than a diner—it’s a time machine with a breakfast menu.

    3

    The Kiltie Drive-In (Oconomowoc, Wisconsin)

    The Kiltie Diner at night

Drive-in diners are all but a bygone restaurant relic. However, there are some that are still thriving—including one iconic establishment in the Midwest.

“If driving in Wisconsin’s Lake Country, about 30 minutes west of Milwaukee, make time to detour to The Kiltie Drive-In off Highway 16,” suggests Janice Moskoff, travel writer and founder of Gather and Go Travel. “It is an old-school seasonal burger, shakes, and fries drive-in where cash is king and the only currency accepted.”

A stop-by here is more than a meal. She says you’ll feel like it is the 1950s as “car hops” (aka servers) take your order from your car and bring food back on a tray that clips to your window.

“Order the onion rings—battered, thick, and crisp—and leave room for dessert: Kiltie’s shines brightest with its custards, banana splits, and shakes,” she recommends.

    5
Herbies Bar and Chowder House (Marathon, Florida)

A drive through the Florida Keys is ideal for beach lovers, and it’s not so bad for anyone looking to have a memorably great meal, either.

Herbies Bar and Chowder House is a roadside diner hole in the wall that was featured on Diners Drive-ins & Dives,” says Laura Elm, travel expert and founder of The Traveling Elms. “Herbies may not look like much from the road, but the food is delicious. We went back twice during our stay!

In addition to the namesake chowder, this hole-in-the-wall also focuses on comfort food classics, including burgers, pulled pork sandwiches, and mac & cheese. It also has locally inspired dishes, including a mahi sandwich and plenty of homemade barbecue.

Elm suggests setting up on the diner’s outdoor patio. “Expect super friendly staff and large portions,” she tells Best Life. “And of course, their key lime pie is to die for!”

    6
    Root Beer Barrel (Douglas, Michigan)

    The Root Beer Barrel diner

On a road trip along Michigan’s western coast? Moskoff suggests a dining option you won’t want to pass by.

“Stop in at the Root Beer Barrel in Douglas, Michigan, where you honest-to-goodness order your food from people working inside an oversized barrel,” she says.

Here, the fare is focused on hot dogs and sweet treats—and there are plenty of ways to enjoy the restaurant’s namesake beverage.

“Get Chicago-style hot dogs with all the toppings, chips, and a sundae or a float made with craft root beer,” Moskoff suggests. “Stretch your legs and enjoy it all outdoors at one of several picnic tables before re-hitting the road.”

    7
Dat Cajun Place (Panama City, Florida)

Great Cajun cuisine is reason enough to plan an entire trip. But you don’t have to travel all the way to Louisiana to get it.

“Dat Cajun Place is a great family restaurant featuring—you guessed it—cajun food,” says Elm of the Florida diner. “We enjoyed the Gator Bites, Boudin Balls, and shrimp.”

The diner offers plenty of Cajun favorites, including po’boys and crawfish etouffee. Fresh catches are also on the menu, with popular seafood baskets and oysters, both cold-shucked and baked, available daily.

“They have a stage with live music, daily specials, and TVs all around,” says Elm. “And it has great service and a kid-friendly atmosphere!”

    H&H Soul Food (Macon, Georgia)

Diners are establishments where authentic cooking can really shine when done right. H&H Soul Food is a perfect example of a restaurant that warrants a detour whenever you’re driving through the South.

The Macon, Georgia institution serves up lunch and dinner, and customers say there’s practically nothing on the menu not worth trying.

“The biscuits are huge and scrumptious but we love the cornbread even more,” one reviewer wrote. “Add sides into the mix, like the best collard greens ever, black-eyed peas and lima beans to die for, smoked turkey and beef brisket, and you have a comfort food experience that will knock your socks off.”

    9
    Agawam Diner (Rowley, Massachusetts)

If you’re looking for a comforting meal on the North Shore in Massachusetts, check out the Agawam Diner, which is serving up some familiar classics.

Open since 1940, the vintage dining car provides plenty of diner mainstays to hungry customers, who are often willing to wait in line for a spot at the counter or in a booth. Breakfast fare includes your reliable stack of pancakes, eggs, home fries, and bacon—plus coffee—but also includes lunch staples such as a BLT and a famous tuna melt. However, there’s still a nod to local cuisine.

“The fried clams and fish do the North Shore proud and never miss,” one reviewer writes.

Just make sure you save room: The diner is also beloved for its dessert counter, especially its pies. Grab a slice or two before heading along the coast to your next destination.

    ]]>
You’re probably pretty familiar with the major clothing no-nos when going through a security checkpoint at the airport—metal belt buckles, bras with underwire, bulky jackets. But now, travelers report that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is stopping them for an odd and embarrassing clothing snafu.

RELATED: You Don’t Have to Take Your Shoes Off at Airport Security Anymore, TSA Announces.

In a recent Reddit post, a female traveler shared that when she went through the full-body scanner at the airport, her groin area was flagged. She said she was “wearing bike shorts and normal underwear” and had no “medical devices or piercings.”

So, what was the issue? According to a slew of other Redditors, “swamp crotch,” or the sweat stains that form in the groin area, is likely to blame.

“This happens to me when I’m late for a flight because I’m sweaty,” said one commenter. “If you went through the machine that makes you put your hands above your head, it senses moisture.”

“Last time I flew out of my home airport of Tampa, I got searched too, the guard said something unnerving like ‘swamp rot’ or ‘swamp crotch’ or something similiarly embarrassing,” shared someone else.

The sweat-stain theory isn’t just anecdotal, either.

In speaking with Reader’s Digest, Shawna Malvini Redden, PhD, a communication researcher who has studied the TSA since 2010, and the author of 101 Pat-Downs, sweat really can set off those security scanners.

“Perspiration is probably the weirdest thing that can set off the scanners,” she said. “It has to do with millimeter wave technology and how the waves bounce off water.”

To put this in context, Malvini Redden explained, “Essentially, the machines send millimeter waves toward a passenger’s insides. The waves go through clothing and reflect off the passenger’s skin (and whatever else is concealed) and bounce back an image, which is interpreted by the machine.”

RELATED: 7 Surprising Items TSA May Flag You for at Airport Security.

This means that sweaty armpits, backs, or other body parts could also set off the scanners.

In fact, a TSA spokesperson confirmed to USA Today that “added moisture from a person’s body can alter the density of clothing, so it is possible perspiration may cause our advanced imaging technology machines to alarm.”

But sweat isn’t the only thing in the groin area that may set the alarms off. Other Redditors commented that they’ve experienced getting flagged for feminine hygiene products and adult diapers.

An unverified TSA Transportation Security Officer responded, “In my experience: compression shorts, pads, diapers, moist/wetness, one piece suits are 85% of the flags I receive…. 12% is false alarms and 3% someone deliberately hiding something.”
